Professional Profile

Me at My Opening_edited.jpg

My passion for learning, creating, and teaching began at an early age and has continued throughout my professional and personal life. As a child, I would come home from school and use my chalkboard to teach my imaginary class. I would also don my artist's smock and create works of art in my "studio" (my childhood bedroom) while listening to Top 40 tunes and thinking to myself, "You're good!" These moments I created strengthened my confidence and propelled my studies of the visual arts even when my environment did not support my talent, course of study, or career choice. Women of my generation had limited career paths, albeit worthwhile, these paths were not aligned with my passions.

While studying painting and drawing in graduate school, I had the opportunity to teach an evening college-level arts appreciation course. I can remember driving home on a cold dark October night and thinking to myself, "This is a blast!" This intersection of teaching and learning was incredibly impactful. It was an epiphany that prompted me to change from a studio visual arts major to an education major with a focus on multicultural visual arts. Learning about and appreciating art forms and artists from diverse cultures shaped me to create artworks authentic to my cultural identity and experience. I am a EuroAmerican woman shaped by the pop culture of the sixties, seventies, and eighties as well as the contemporary culture of today.

Each artist must create what is real to her/him/them, or the work is just an exercise in recreating the experiences of someone else. These artworks are indeed my own experience and flow from my imagination and intuition.
